Serenity Streamside

The clients told us from the very beginning of the design process that their backyard was their retreat. Investing in the creation of a paradise within their property lines was more valuable to them than taking a tropical getaway. The sloping yard down to a woodland creek immediately excited us with a canvas with incredible potential.

The clients’ paramount concern was to rebuild and reinforce the bank of a creek that runs through their property while retaining the woodland character of the area – one of their favorite spots to relax. During the rainy seasons the swelling waters threatened to erode the creek edge and occasionally flooded the lower portion of their property. Large stone slabs & boulders were used to establish a permanent solution without bringing manufactured materials into the landscape.

As the construction of the creek retention was nearing completion, the clients were so thrilled with the view down to the creek they wanted to be able to spend more time down at its banks. Our crew cleared a space for a bench to create a serene creekside relaxation space.

Up the hillside at the clients’ residence had a small deck off of a 3-season room. They wanted to expand the usable area to better enjoy the view down on their new and improved stone creek edge, while also utilizing the unique elevation changes their back yard offered. A palette of various natural stone materials was used in tandem with composite decking & weathered wall blocks to harmoniously blend the built and native environs.

A gas firepit was integrated into the outer retaining wall so the clients can spend more time outside year-round. A built-in grill on the patio makes grilling anytime easy without having to keep propane in stock. Woodland plants including some native understory perennials & trees that thrive in the dappled shade of the large existing trees help add a lush quality to the space. It has been exciting to watch the plants establish themselves over the last few years continuing to enhance the feeling of an escape from the hustle and bustle of the ever-growing Columbus metropolitan area.
