When plans were underway for the new visitor entrance at Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens, GreenScapes Landscape Co. played a pivotal role in shaping one of its most iconic features: the nearly three-story living green wall.
The wall was not part of the original concept or construction budget, but GreenScapes’ founder, Bill Gerhardt, envisioned it as a way to embody the Conservatory’s mission: “to improve quality of life and connect the community through nature.” Bill proposed the installation as a striking way to greet visitors and immediately immerse them in the beauty and vitality of the natural world.
To bring this vision to life, GreenScapes collaborated with the Conservatory team on the concept and donated the living green wall. In 2016, the feature became a reality, standing as a vibrant symbol of connection, community, and the shared appreciation of nature.
Today, the wall remains a prominent element of the Conservatory’s entry experience and a testament to GreenScapes’ commitment to enhancing public spaces in meaningful and lasting ways.
With that in mind, Bill wanted the visitors to experience just that—the connection through nature as soon as community members walked into the conservatory. Since the live green wall was not in the original concept for the visitor entrance and not part of the budget, Bill agreed to support whatever it took to include the green wall in the construction.
To make this happen, GreenScapes Landscape Company helped with the design and donated the entire installation of the living green wall. In 2016 the dream became a reality and the prominent feature of the new visitor’s entry to Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens.
