A Contemporary Classic

For this young family, creating an outdoor space that was both practical and stylish was a top priority. They wanted a space that felt cohesive with their home’s classic Upper Arlington character while accommodating both entertaining and everyday family life.

We designed a spacious patio with separate areas for dining and a firepit, providing flexibility for hosting guests or unwinding outdoors. At the same time, we maintained plenty of lawn space for the kids to enjoy.

To complement the home’s architecture, we used a natural stone palette of Pennsylvania bluestone, Indiana limestone, and North Shore limestone. These materials are a hallmark of traditional Upper Arlington homes, but we arranged them in a clean, modern layout to give the space a fresh update.

Structural elements like masonry steps, a firepit, and a seat wall define the space, adding both function and craftsmanship.

In addition to the backyard improvements, we redesigned the front walkway for a more direct and natural flow from the driveway to the new stoop and portico. Stone retaining walls were added to manage the yard’s slope, blending seamlessly with the overall design.

The final result is a refined, highly functional outdoor space that enhances both the home’s character and the family’s daily life.
