GreenScapes Landscape Designs on NARI Tour of Homes
It’s still winter, but spring will be here before we know it. GreenScapes Head of Residential Design Marc Aubry explained in a recent interview that February and March is the time of year that the better landscaping companies in Central Ohio begin to be booked up for the spring planting season. With over 42 years in business, GreenScapes has designed many a spring garden. GreenScapes has one of the longest histories among landscaping companies in Central Ohio. Their motto, Excellence by Design, is visible in their legacy of award winning landscape designs throughout the Columbus area.
In an interview that aired in mid-February 2018 on Sunny 95’s Sunday Morning show, From Our House to Your Home, Aubry discussed spring planting, landscaping trends and some memorable landscape designs with host Marty Reed. The two discussed a property that was on the 2017 National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) Spring Home Tour. With that tour fast approaching on May 5th and 6th, 2018, they looked back at that outstanding landscape design. The property is a whole house remodel done by The Cleary Company with GreenScapes collaborating on the landscaping. Located on Zollinger Road in Upper Arlington, the home is a 1950s ranch typical of north Upper Arlington, and of the home designs of its vintage.
The project included three remodeled bathrooms, a gourmet kitchen, a sunroom with a gas fireplace, and a basement remodel. The project also included an exterior remodel with all new windows and (in one reviewer’s words) an “amazing” backyard renovation with all new bird-friendly landscaping, a water feature, a paver patio, a stone fireplace, pergola and custom shed. Aubry noted that GreenScapes completed the plan and The Cleary Company completed the wooden structures.
Landscaping and Building Partnerships
GreenScapes partners with top homebuilders in Central Ohio, primarily in upscale neighborhoods of Bexley, Dublin, Upper Arlington, Westerville, Powell and New Albany. But, GreenScapes works throughout Central Ohio on new landscaping designs as well as remodels.
Designs for Indoor/Outdoor Living
In today’s world, landscaping and outdoor spaces have become a big part of home remodels, as more and more homeowners want to maximize their living space and blend the indoors with the outdoors via windows, large doors, and beautiful, livable landscaping features. Aubry explained, “The family wanted to create an outdoor living space. That project is a good example of bringing professionals together early in the project and being able to create a really nice indoor/outdoor space, and transitional spaces.” In the case of the UA home, Aubry said, “The homeowner was very interested in birds and wildlife, and we were able to accomplish that. She has no turf in her back yard. It’s all plants—plants that attract wildlife and birds. We did the design, and The Cleary Company came back and completed the custom carpentry. It was a real team effort,” Aubry noted. “The addition included a lot of glass walls. It is very nice to sit in the home and look outside and watch the activity in the garden, the entire back yard. The glass has a special reflective coating on it. It’s designed so that birds won’t fly into it.”
Host Marty Reed said that his wife couldn’t wait to see that landscape design in the springtime. The landscaping is designed to harbor and protect, and attract overwintering birds throughout the winter. The end result is kind of like a sanctuary, a phenomenal place to enjoy nature.
Landscaping at Franklin Park Conservatory
GreenScapes donates designs and labor annually toward projects at the Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens. One of the most memorable indoor/outdoor spaces at the Conservatory is The Wells Barn, which is a historic barn that was rebuilt on the grounds of the Conservatory. The Wells Barn has been repurposed as an event space, and has become very popular for large parties, fundraisers, wedding receptions and community educational events. GreenScapes designed an outside pizza oven and an outdoor kitchen at the Scotts Miracle-Gro® garden campus, which is adjacent to the barn, and the kitchen area showcases five different ways to cook outside on a “live” fire.
With decades of experience in landscaping maintenance, residential designs, and commercial projects, GreenScapes certainly has made their mark on—and created—some of Central Ohio’s most memorable green spaces. But Aubry says, “The important to remember about landscaping is, there’s only one correct way to plant a tree.”
Award-Winning Landscaping in New Albany
GreenScapes’ Marc Aubry earned the top award for the 2010 New Albany Parade of Homes for his landscape design at a Georgian-style home in the New Albany Country Club community. House Trends Columbus called the space a “beautifully crafted courtyard” within the confines of a tight lot. Indeed, the design turned negative space into an award-winning outdoor destination. Aubry worked in tandem with Weaver Custom Homes, adding a brick wall to provide definition, an outdoor fireplace with seating and gracefully curving brick walkways to offset the rigid lines of the home. Magnolias, boxwood and a variety of perennials soften the lines even further, hugging the living areas and providing beautiful views from the fireplace, seating and dining areas. The space is private, intimate, and ultimately livable with a variety of landscaping ideas wrought into the living and gathering areas. The landscaping ideas that Aubry used to connect the indoor and outdoor spaces of the 5,300 square foot home give the entire property functionality and classic luxury. The design earned GreenScapes the 2010 Building Industry Association of Central Ohio Parade of Homes top award for landscape architecture.
